The United Nations Development Programme has been offering internship opportunities every year at various places for qualified applicants to improve their skills while earning something. It is another application round again, and the UNDP Washington Representation Office internships for Fall 2025 and Spring 2025 are now accepting applications for two different roles. The said roles are: General Intern position, Communications, and Outreach Intern position.

More About the Roles:

A. General Internship

The general Internship role is ideal for postgraduate students in development‑related fields such as economics, public administration, environmental studies, and others willing to gain more experience.  

This Role Provides:

1. Research and Analysis Experience: You will support policy papers, update contact databases, and assist with day‑to‑day operations and event planning.

2. Capitol Hill Exposure: You will attend congressional hearings, brief UNDP staff on U.S. policy developments, and liaise with think tanks and government agencies.


Qualifications Required:

To qualify for this, it is required that you have: 

1. Prior experience on Capitol Hill or familiarity with the U.S. Congress

2. Field experience in international development or technical cooperation


B. Communications and Outreach Internship

This internship role is designed for those with strong media and digital skills and experience to enhance their experience while assisting the UNDP. 

Your Duties in this Role Include:

1. Media Monitoring and Digital Strategy: You will track media and social channels, assemble daily briefs, and help implement new communications tactics. Applicants with audio/video editing skill is a plus.

2. Content Development: You will update and maintain the UNDP Washington website, draft press releases, newsletters, and social media campaigns to help disseminate information across the board. 


Required Skills for this Role:

Applicants must possess the following three (3) skills. A successful applicant for this role should be: 

1. Familiar with web content management systems

2. Excellent in writing and proofreading

3. Have experience in social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Constant Contact)


Eligibility Criteria:

For both tracks, the following minimum qualifications should be used as a checklist: 

1. The applicant must enroll in a graduate degree program in communications or a development field.

2. The applicant must return to studies post‐internship (Spring 2025 or Fall 2025).

3. You must have a three‑ to six‑month commitment, at least 24 hours/week to your role. 

4. You must be proficient in written and spoken English.

5. The applicant must demonstrate a passion for global development and a willingness to work in diverse environments.


Materials Needed to Complete Application:

All application materials must be combined in one PDF before submission and not in separate PDF files. These materials include: 

1. Completed and signed UNDP Internship Application Form, which can be downloaded and filled out. 

2. You must submit one reference letter (academic or professional) as part of the application 

3. Applicant must submit a cover letter tailored to their chosen internship track or role. 

4. You must submit a current CV (1–2 pages)


Important Deadlines:

  • For applicants willing to apply for the Fall 2025 Internships, submit an application by 15 June 2025 (11:59 p.m. ET) to be considered, and
  • For applicants willing to apply for the Spring 2025 Internship, applications are closed for now. The deadline was 15 January 2025.
